Un enfoque integrado de la bioecología, distribución espacial y explotación pesquera del mero (Epinephelus itajara) en el norte de Brasil

Este estudio presenta un análisis integrado de la bioecología, estructura poblacional, distribución espacial e interacción con la pesca del mero (Epinephelus itajara) en la costa norte de Brasil. Con base en una revisión bibliográfica cualitativa y sistematizada, la investigación reúne información científica relevante para respaldar estrategias de conservación y manejo. La especie desempeña un papel ecológico fundamental como depredador tope y presenta uso ontogenético de hábitats, con juveniles asociados a manglares y estuarios, y adultos a ambientes arrecifales, lo que evidencia la importancia de la conectividad entre estos ecosistemas. Características biológicas como el crecimiento lento, la maduración tardía y la formación de agregaciones reproductivas aumentan su vulnerabilidad a la sobrepesca. Los resultados indican un escenario preocupante de declive poblacional, incluso bajo un régimen de moratoria, lo que revela limitaciones en la fiscalización y en la efectividad de las medidas de gestión. La pesca ilegal, la captura incidental y la degradación de hábitats figuran entre las principales amenazas para la especie. La acuicultura se discute como una alternativa complementaria para reducir la presión sobre las poblaciones naturales, siempre que se lleve a cabo de forma sostenible. Se entiende que la conservación de E. itajara depende de la adopción de estrategias integradas que involucren la protección de hábitats, el fortalecimiento de la gestión pesquera y la continuidad de las investigaciones científicas.
