ANALYSIS OF THE APTITUDE FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION OF COMMUNITY-BASED TOURISM IN THE COMMUNITY OF MANGUE SECO, RAPOSA (MARANHÃO, BRAZIL).

Abstract

Tourism is a multidisciplinary activity that uses the culture and natural resources of a receiving location as its main elements. Mass tourism, disorderly, causes the depreciation of socio-environmental attributes, harming tourist activity.  In this context, Community-Based Tourism (CBT) presents itself as a proposal for the development of tourism with the potential to promote socio-environmental sustainability in the context of traditional communities. This article aims to analyze the aptitude for the implementation of CBT in the community of Mangue Seco, municipality of Raposa-MA, which receives visitors spontaneously and with little protagonism of the community. A qualitative-quantitative, exploratory-descriptive approach was used, integrating the ethnographic and phenomenological perspectives, and the Tourist Attractiveness Index (TAI) was adapted, whose values are limited between 0 and 5. The results showed an average IAT of 2.90, with the lowest IAT for the management attribute (less than 2.0) showing that fitness is influenced by little or no basic infrastructure such as sanitation, water supply and energy. The highest IAT was obtained for the biophysical and social attributes (between 3.0 and 4.0), revealing the locality as a potential destination of regional relevance. An integrated and participatory management is recommended for the search for sustainable alternatives and in coherence with the local reality so that CBT becomes a successful strategy.

He holds a degree in History from the State University of Maranhão (2003), a Specialization in Environmental Education (2005), a master's degree in Archaeology from the University of São Paulo (2008) and a PhD in Archaeology from the University of São Paulo (2013). He is currently a Professor of Higher Education at the Federal University of Maranhão - Department of Oceanography and Limnology. He is a member of the Graduate Program in Culture and Society PGCult UFMA (Master's and Doctorate) and Development and Environment PRODEMA - UFMA and Doctorate in PRODEMA Network as a permanent professor. He is Coordinator of the Doctorate UFMA - PRODEMA Network. He coordinates the Cultural Observatory of Maranhão - PGCult - UFMA and the Laboratory of Archaeology and Cultural Studies - LAEC - DEOLI - UFMA. He is Vice Coordinator of the Environmental Planning Laboratory - LACPLAN. She coordinated the PARFOR CAPES Degree and History Course at UFMA, between January 2024 and July 2025. He has experience in the areas of Archaeology, History and Cultural Studies, with emphasis on the following topics: shell mounds, prehistoric ceramics, cultural heritage, and in cultural policies and cultural studies. Post-doctorate with Geoecology of Landscapes and Traditional Knowledge, from the Federal University of Ceará, at the Laboratory of Landscape Geoecology and Environmental Planning (LAGEPLAN, UFC), Full Member of the Maranhão Academy of Sciences. Life member of the International Society for Ecological Restoration (SER). She is currently Associate Professor 4 at the Federal University of Maranhão. Responsible for LAMA - Mangrove Laboratory and founder/coordinator of CERMANGUE - Mangrove Recovery Center at UFMA. is a professor and researcher at the Graduate Program, Master's and Doctorate, in Nature and Development (PRODEMA) UFMA. He works in the areas of: Ecology, Biological Oceanography and Environmental Education, with an emphasis on Ecology and Restoration of Mangroves and formal Socio-Environmental Oceanography.
