Autism Spectrum Disorder: from biological understanding to individualized education program
Keywords:
Applied behavior analysis, Neurodevelopment, Social inclusion, VideogameAbstract
The inclusion of people with disabilities, in such a way to respect their dignity and rights granted by law, is a global challenge. Although the technological advances of the 1990s have guided policies towards equitable treatment, the success of inclusion fundamentally depends on social perception of neurodiversity. Disseminating information about disabilities and raising public awareness are crucial to combating prejudice. This article aims to offer a comprehensive and interdisciplinary view of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), based on the scientific, socio-political, and educational pillars that support the inclusion process. After a brief presentation of the concept of disability, several aspects of neurodevelopment are related to the symptomatology of autism, with emphasis on genetic and epigenetic aspects. The research-extension project presented below was conducted in a community center in the city of Belém (PA) and used an approach based on Applied Behavior Analysis. An individualized intervention plan was developed to meet the needs of a 12-year-old with level 2 autism spectrum disorder, starting with his favorite video game. The use of positive reinforcement, the development of goals together with the young person, and the creation of friendly bonds proved to be valuable tools for improving the young person's target behavior.
