Abstract

Aim: To verify whether the practice of physical exercises performed by pregnant women can positively influence their quality of life. Methods: Pregnant women, recruited from a physical therapy clinic, answered three questionnaires: 1) collection of sociodemographic and anthropometric data; 2) level of physical activity, International Physical Activity Questionnaire and, 3) Questionnaire on aspects related to quality of life. The assessment of nutritional status was made based on BMI. The data obtained were presented as mean and standard error and a significance level of 5% was considered. Results: Fifty pregnant women participated in the study. Chronological age, gestational age, weight, height, and BMI were not different between the groups. According to the level of physical activity, pregnant women were classified as: a) sedentary (n=2); b) insufficiently active (n=19); c) active (n=19) and d) very active (n=10). The physical and environmental domains did not show statistical differences. Regarding the psychological, social relationships, self-assessment and general quality of life domains, active and very active pregnant women presented better scores when compared to insufficiently active and sedentary pregnant women. Conclusions: It is concluded that the association between physical exercise and quality of life in pregnant women is positive. Therefore, regular physical exercise should be encouraged in this group.
