FIRST RECORD OF THE OCCURRENCE OF PHYTOPHAGY ON LEAVES AND FLOWERS OF Catasetum fimbriatum (Morren) Lindl. & Paxton (ORCHIDACEAE: CATASETINAE) BY Hyphilaria thasus Stoll. (LEPDOPTERA: RIODINIDAE) IN BRAZIL

Catasetum fimbriatum is an epiphytic orchid that occurs in several states in Brazil, including Goiás, that blossoms from summer to autumn. It’s propagation can be affected by the herbivory by lepidopterans. The aim of this paper is to report the phytophagy of this orchid species in Brazil. The study was carried out at the Agronomy School of the Federal University of Goiás, Goiânia - Goiás. In February 2021, the first record of larvae infestation was observed in the orchid. In the following years of 2022 and 2023, infestations persisted on the same plant. In 2021, eleven insect larvae were collected from the plant. Phytophagy of leaves, stems, flower buds and flowers of C. fimbriatum was observed by the larvae Hyphilaria thasus. In the Cerrado region of Brazil (Brazilian Savanna), this behavior occurs in the rainy months of the second half of October until the end of March, when the host orchids have leaves, flower stalks, buds and flowers in abundance; in addition to higher humidity and temperatures, favoring the development of the insect.
