This article aims to discuss the importance of the training of proficient readers in the scope of reading and didactic mediation practices. In this sense, it problematizes the question of pedagogical practice regarding the teaching of reading and writing, as well as reflecting on the possibilities of expanding the reading repertoire of children and young people from the reading conscience. The considerations anchored in authors such as Soares (2003), Ferreiro (1995) and Freire (1982) point to the understanding of language use as a powerful tool that enhances the insertion of subjects in the literate universe, as well as enables them to exercise learning and of citizenship.
