Abstract

The consumption of wild animal meat is common in traditional communities, extending beyond mere nutrition and involving hunting methods passed down through generations, carrying strong cultural significance. However, unregulated and unmonitored practices pose risks to both fauna and consumer health. This study investigated the commercialization and consumption of wild animal meat in six markets in Belém, two in Paragominas and one in Abaetetuba, Pará State, additionally, it analyzed the incidence of zoonoses, the main species consumed, and other factors contributing to this practice. The research was conducted through questionnaires applied in person to consumers and vendors, created using the Google Forms platform.  The results indicate a high consumption of bushmeat in these markets, aligned with the fact that 81.13% of respondents were unaware of the health risks associated with this type of consumption. The observed demand may encourage the captive breeding of wild animals with economic potential for human consumption in Eastern Amazonia. Furthermore, the study highlights the need for stronger action by official inspection services and the implementation of permanent campaigns to raise awareness among the population about the risk of species extinction in the Amazon and the occurrence of zoonoses related to illegal consumption.
